Hi All,
I have had the bug again for the last couple of months (the visit to the NY Flagship late last year could be the cause - thanks heaps Bill and Kevin, with friends like this who needs enemies!! :) ) and have been looking to add something "special" to the collection.
I have had 6 IWC's for a while now and was aiming for that magical 7th - 1 for each day of the week (it is funny the targets we set ourselves) but did not simply want to add another watch, I wanted this to be a worth addition. My collection was split between a mix of current and vintage, with a Portuguese 5001, 3799 Top Gun Double Chrono, Mk XI, 3568 Aquatimer 2000, 666AD Ingenieur and a 3227 Ingenieur.
With the 666AD and 3227 AMG Ingenieurs coupled with the Mk XI and 3799 Top Gun Pilot, I had the beginnings of my own farther and son collection (almost grandfather and grandson) so when the itch came back I thought about developing on that and started looking for something unique that would be comfortable next to one of the others. Like most people here, that want is also coupled with some monetary constraints so whilst I was looking for something special, I had to keep it within a certain budget. Recently, I thought I had narrowed that down to a Portuguese Jubilee 5441 in stainless which I felt would have not only been a great addition but also inline with the pseudo father son them when coupled with the 5001.
I have for a long time wanted to add a perpetual to the collection but it has been just out of reach financially for a BPP or PPC and had been thinking long and hard about adding a Kurt Klaus DaVinci 3762 to the collection but for some reason it just doesn't quite fill the gap that I had personally. I have also been looking to add my first precious metal watch to the collection and had identified a few suitable Portuguese Regulateur 5444's that I would love to add - one in white gold and one in platinum - the white gold I felt did not quite fill the need for something special whereas the platinum certainly did, but for the moment did not fall in line with the father son theme so that pretty much left me with the Portuguese Jubilee - one that I am more than happy to have in the collection so as of yesterday I had pretty much locked it in.
Inline with the extreme amounts of research that I always do for each purchase, I decided to do another look around before committing to a Jubilee and as fate would have it, have broken every thought I have had over the last few months. In the space of 24 hours, I sadly no longer have 6 IWC's in my collection, nor do I have any vintage pieces in the collection - both my beloved 666AD and Mk XI are no longer with me nor is my AMG Ingenieur, and I no longer have the basis of a father-son collection, but as they say, when one door closes, another opens.
Just over an hour ago I waved goodbye to my Ingenieurs and Mk XI, and said hello to this beauty -
Yep, a shiny, as new 5022 Portuguese Perpetual Calendar in white gold with the absolutely lovely Ardoise dial - photos really dont do these justice! Whilst an older model, it looks like it has not been worn - apparently the previous owner has a habit of buying watches and then sticking them in a safe, only for them to come out when something newer and better is available. There is still the little protector on the deployment clasp that stops the pin hitting the metal underneath, no scratches or marks at all, case, papers, warranty card etc, all in as new condition. For some reason it has a black strap on it instead of the brown but with the condition of the watch itself it lends me to believe that it was changed at purchase rather than after the brown one wearing out - I will no doubt be putting a brown one back on soon and keeping the black one as a spare for the 5001.
So whilst I had to sadly say goodbye to a few of my watches, I am welcoming something into the collection that I have been dreaming of for a long time now. I have not picked it up yet but should (fingers crossed) have it tomorrow, so will get some updated shots including a couple of wrist shots :) And will have it in time for the end of Feb - one of those special times to have a perpetual.
Cheers,
Ben

Ben, What a great tale, and what a fantastic result. It seems we don't see this particular model here very often, and your pictures make your choice come alive.

I'm glad for you- enjoy this one very much.

Thanks Nelson, not sure why your post isn't showing up but thought I would re-post it. This is the first one I have seen in the flesh but even before I saw it I knew it was for me.
MF - is it possible for you to edit the subject of this thread - in my excitement I missed a typo - Inspiration :)
The problem I have now is that I will still likely get the Regulateur and the Jubilee some time down the track . . . Hmm, maybe need to focus on a Portuguese collection, time will tell.

Congratulations Ben on finding that beauty! I know exactly how you feel about having to say goodbye to a few beloved watches to finally get a grail watch.
I can personally tell you that you will probably miss the watches you sold/traded in but in the end, I think you made a good choice.
Enjoy your lovely Portuguese Perpetual with that magnificent Ardoise dial and wear it in good health!

Whilst I loved my Mark XI, I have not worn it a lot, it kind of just sat in the safe a lot, the 666AD though got a lot of wrist time so I will miss that, but one quick look down at the wrist and moon phase will quickly calm me down.
A photo Shing just posted (which I also saw on facebook a few hours ago) reminded me of something - with the black strap on this one and my want to have a brown one back on it, now is the time I think to try out a beautiful Santoni strap - think that with the Ardoise dial will go spot on.
Cheers,
Ben

A beauty indeed. Big congratulations on a great pickup. I agree with Michael, looking at that watch should easily blunt any residual pain from trading in some of your other IWCs. And look at the bright side, now you get to work your way back up to seven.
