does anyone know if some early 1960s caliber 89 movements were made without a sweep second hand function? I have one and am not sure if the second hand is missing or not part of the movement. thank you.

I hate to say "never say never" --there always in theory could be one exception. But, no, to the best of my knowledge all calibre 89s left the factory with a sweep seconds hand.

Winding only happens by rotating the crown clockwise. Nothing happens when the crown is rotated anti-clockwise and no harm is done if you do. With a manual wound watch the crown will stop rotating when it reaches a full wind. Stop winding at this point and back it off a couple of turns to take some of the tension off the winding train. Automatic winding watches have a clutch that prevents overwinding. Usually 50 turns will fully wind the mainspring.
thank you.
