I know not why, but somehow I never had a Cal. 96 based timepiece in my collection. It's not that I was not aware of the movement - there were posts around Cal. 96 years ago.
This (sadly) bare movement came across my path and being one of only 10.600 produced, I decided to secure it. Now that I have it (it's not in great shape) I am amazed at the marvel of watch engineering and great finish that IWC put into this movement.
Now, I want more of this movement in my collection.
I think in many ways it's a miniaturized cal. 83. But also for the same reasons I like the small ladies' movements like cal. 41....to make a small movement requires skill and finesse.

The calibres c.90 to the c.94 (and the c.96) is
THE ODD IWC CALIBER FAFILY.
The most normal ones are the c.94 and the c.96 the tiny versions of the c.83. c.96 and c.94 measure 8 3/4 lig (19.4mm, c.96 is flatter and has probably a different wheeling) they have a normal balance frequency of 18'000 bph.
The really odd ones are the c.90 to 92 with a bph of 17897 and the c.93 with 21'000 bph. c.90 and 91 measure 7 1/2 lig. (17.3mm) Those odd frequencies have no second hand, as the corresponding wheel is not making one revolution a minute.
The normal c.83 is a 12 ligner (26.5 mm)
Here a picture of the Family I presented quite a while ago here in the forum... c.90 to 94
