I see two variables
First, is the reason why one buys the Cousteau. This is personal with the buyer and may lead to an answer such as "Metal bracelet because I want an Orange and Blue dress watch." Or, "Blue rubber strap, of course, because it is a dive watch." And so on. Second, the MSRP on the metal bracelet is $1,175! I confess, although I am usually a metal bracelet person, I prefer the blue rubber strap as shown in Michael's photo comparison. At least that was my surprised reaction when I looked at the photo!

Is a bracelet on the Cousteau model a mistake?
Hello Michael,
I believe a bracelet on the cousteau model is really no mistake. The cousteau diver with steel bracelet is my daily watch and I love it. I.m not a diver so I don't need the blue strap. IWC Amsterdam told me, when they saw my watch last year, that they liked it more with bracelet. This bracelet from IWC is really special made for the new diving watches and it fits perfect on the Cousteau Diver. If I like I can always use the blue strap in the future.

Please, let nobody shoot me for my thoughts...
...but I have always found the Cousteau with blue strap, kind of "cheep" looking, like a play / children's watch.
Apart - of course - of it's exclusiveness due to the limited production. And - by the way - (thinking about the earlier post of MF), I am wandering what everyone's opinion would be, should the production not have been limited...would the hype still exist ?
However, what made me change my opinion partially, was Tony's picture from his earlier post (which he repeated here). His picture made me change opinion about the Cousteau, it became more a "class" watch and the "toy" aspect was totally gone. With the bracelet, I would have gone for it, but not with the blue rubber strap.

Maybe an acquired taste..
..but I think that the rubber strap looks more casual and understated. And the special design where the case/horns meet with the strap is more prominent. Cousteau with rubber strap is IWC´s friendly face ;-)

the Cousteau is so special and lovely to look at, that the strap or bracelet are automatic compliments.

Just my personal taste !
Rob.
This is not a Photoshop product, but a real quartz available today. It even has a rubber strap!
But what I like about the IWC Cousteau model is not it's preciousness.

Michael
