THE STORY

The active volcano La Cumbre on the island of Fernandina, which last erupted in 2009, is unmistakable and marked by a history of change. Now, IWC Schaffhausen is dedicating a special diver’s watch to this impressive force of nature: the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “La Cumbre Volcano”. The special back engraving shows the volcano spewing a huge cloud of ash during an eruption. The warm feel of the rubber coating on the stainless-steel case makes the watch very comfortable to wear. Part of the proceeds will go to the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF), which is dedicated to the preservation of the Galapagos Islands and has worked with IWC Schaffhausen since 2009. The aim of the Galapagos scientific centre is to research the unique ecosystem on land and in the ocean and to protect the Galapagos, a World Heritage site, from irreversible damage. The watch is fitted with the IWC-manufactured 89365-calibre movement and has all the innovative features of the Aquatimer.

Charles Darwin Foundation

Charles Darwin Foundation

Coastal landscapes with black volcanic rock, scorched hillsides covered with cactuses and holy wood trees, mountain peaks shrouded in mist – the breathtaking landscape of the Galapagos Islands leaves visitors spellbound. The unique flora and fauna on the volcanic archipelago situated around 1,000 kilometres from the coast of Ecuador has developed over the past 4 million years. Many of the unique species known as “endemic”, such as giant tortoises, Darwin’s finches and marine iguanas are not found anywhere else on earth. However, human settlement, the introduction of foreign species and overfishing are posing a serious threat to this fragile ecosystem. The Charles Darwin Foundation, founded in 1959 under the auspices of UNESCO and the IUCN, is committed to the protection of the islands through its continuous research and educational work in collaboration with the Galapagos National Park Directorate and many other national and international institutions. IWC Schaffhausen has been a partner of the foundation since 2009, supporting the work of over 100 researchers, students and volunteers with a share of the proceeds from the sale of special edition Aquatimer watches.
