ABOUT THE WATCH
Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph
The tourbillon is one of the most fascinating achievements in the art of watchmaking. The balance wheel is placed in a cage that constantly revolves around its own axis. This not only creates a visual spectacle on the dial, but the constant rotation also reduces the influence of gravity on the oscillating system and contributes to a more precise rate. The flying minute tourbillon of the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph is positioned at 6 o'clock. Thanks to the integrated tourbillon stop, the movement can be brought to a complete stop by pulling out the crown and the time set with down-to-the-second accuracy. The pallet lever and the escape wheel have been treated with a special coating. This so-called Diamond Shell® technology reduces friction and improves the flow of energy in the movement. The 12 o’clock position is reserved for the chronograph counter, where the stopped hours and minutes are displayed together. Finally, at 9 o’clock, there is the retrograde date display, whose hand jumps back to the initial position at the end of each month. All three complications are powered by the IWC-manufactured 89900 calibre. Oscillating at a frequency of 4 hertz, the chronograph movement features an automatic winding mechanism that builds up a power reserve of 68 hours. This Haute Horlogerie masterpiece is presented in an exquisite platinum case and with a blue dial. The watch is fitted with a blue alligator leather strap from Santoni.
Retrograde date display | IWC Schaffhausen
The retrograde date display shows the passing of the month with a date hand that moves in an arc from the 1st to the 31st of the month. After 31 days have passed, the spring is no longer under tension and allows the date hand to jump back to “one”. In months with fewer than 31 days or when the watch has not been used for a while, the date display can be advanced rapidly using the crown. This does not involve resetting the time.
