The most striking design feature of the Ingenieur is the characteristic round bezel. It is secured to the casing ring with five polygonal screws. The screws thus have a genuinely technical function and are always in the same position. Machined from a solid piece of metal, the bezel is elaborately finished by hand with polished and satin-finished surfaces.

IWC’s expertise in magnetic field protection is deeply rooted in professional watches. The soft-iron inner case, a signature feature of the Ingenieur since 1955, was initially developed for the Pilot’s Watch Mark 11. It conducts magnetic field lines around the movement and prevents them from reaching the sensitive components inside.

Gérald Genta was born in Geneva on 1 May 1931. After completing his apprenticeship as a goldsmith, he went into business as a watch designer, establishing a profession that had not previously existed. His legendary steel luxury sports watches with fully integrated bracelets, defined a product category unknown to the Swiss watch industry in the 1970s.

INGENIEUR SL

In the 1970s, IWC commissioned Gérald Genta to redesign the Ingenieur. Genta’s Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, was launched in 1976. Its strong aesthetic codes such as the screw-on bezel with five recesses, the dial with a special structure and the integrated H-link bracelet have shaped the history of the IWC Ingenieur to this day.
