It was the shared love of timeless aesthetics and vintage motor sports that inspired IWC to partner up with the California based lifestyle brand Period Correct. As the face of IWC’s new campaign for the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” (Ref. 387905) in Ceratanium®, the brand’s co-founder and creative director Bryan Calvero takes us on a fast-paced ride in yet another icon that holds cult status today: the Mercedes-Benz 190 Evo II. The design legend celebrated its premiere around the same time as the original Pilot’s Watch Chronograph (ref. 3705) in ceramic.
Pilot’s watch 3705 and Evo II: telling stories from the past
Bryan has had a fascination for cars from early childhood and has passionately collected die-cast and remote-controlled cars since the early age of four. His parents would take him to dealerships and car shows, and he frequently watched videos of DTM racing and other car films. “Being able to collect and be around full-scale classic race cars today is a dream come true for a boy like me,” says the designer.

Balance between heritage and modern design
To team up with IWC Schaffhausen for the launch of a timepiece dedicated to a true design icon was a no-brainer for Bryan. It’s the challenge of delicately balancing heritage, precision engineering and modern design that intrigued him. Just like the Evo II, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph ref. 3705 was a tool watch designed for a purpose: allowing pilots to use their watch throughout a flight. While the Evo II was made for racing.
“Both have a certain similarity. The 3705 was ahead of its time in material and design. So too was the engine of the Evolution II, paired with its aero coil to keep it hugging the track. The Evo II was offered only in black with its speedometer and tachometer in black and black dials featuring white hints with pumpkin accents. Both are timeless and classic yet modern at the same time.”
