BASKETBALL FOR UNITY

Larnaka / Schaffhausen – 1 December 2016 – IWC Schaffhausen and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation visited Cyprus to celebrate with Cypriot student Eleni Partakki, the winner of last year’s IWC children’s drawing competition. Her drawing showing girls and boys playing ball together is engraved on the case back of the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”.

Tamika Catchings, US sports legend and one of the greatest players in WNBA history, and Eleni Partakki joined forces on the basketball court in order to celebrate Eleni’s win in last year’s IWC drawing contest, themed “Time for Sport”.

“Honestly, I never thought my drawing would win. I believed that people wouldn’t understand the message behind the drawing and how much it means to me. Sport can play a big part in bringing us all together in Cyprus. I was so excited to meet Tamika and listen to her talking about her success stories and her challenges. She was so inspiring.”, Eleni explained.

Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen

“Many children and teenagers growing up in Cyprus are suffering because of the division of the island. The drawing by Eleni Partakki beautifully captures how sports can build positive relationships and overcome generations of mistrust. The project in which Eleni takes part epitomizes the core values of the Laureus Sports for Good Foundation, and these values are also at the foundation of IWC’s ongoing commitment to improving society”, said Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

Eleni is a participant in PeacePlayers International, a Laureus-supported project which encourages Greek- Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot boys and girls to play basketball together. She won the drawing competition IWC organizes each year for children and adolescents in the context of the foundation’s projects. An expert jury reviews all entries and selects the winner.

Eleni’s drawing shows girls and boys playing with a ball and is engraved on the case back of the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”, which is limited to 1500 pieces worldwide. The timepiece marks the tenth special edition IWC has launched as part of its commitment for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The engraving on the case back is a reminder that a portion of the proceeds from sales helps to support the foundation’s various social projects. IWC has been a Global Partner of Laureus Sport for Good since 2005.
