A characteristic feature of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is the dial with its grid-like patterning, which consists of fine lines offset by 90 degrees from each other. The “grid” is stamped into the blank with an embossing tool before galvanizing. Appliqués with luminescent coating provide additional depth on the dial and make it easy to read the time even at night.

The case of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 combines iconic design with engineering excellence. The individual case components are milled from bars using high-precision CNC machines. Afterward, they are finished by hand using techniques such as polishing, satin-finishing or sand-blasting, drawing on the comprehensive expertise of IWC’s trained surface refiners.

Gérald Genta was born in Geneva on 1 May 1931. After completing his apprenticeship as a goldsmith, he went into business as a watch designer, establishing a profession that had not previously existed. His legendary steel luxury sports watches with fully integrated bracelets, defined a product category unknown to the Swiss watch industry in the 1970s.

INGENIEUR SL

In the 1970s, IWC commissioned Gérald Genta to redesign the Ingenieur. Genta’s Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, was launched in 1976. Its strong aesthetic codes such as the screw-on bezel with five recesses, the dial with a special structure and the integrated H-link bracelet have shaped the history of the IWC Ingenieur to this day.
