IWC Schaffhausen celebrated the 75th birthday of the iconic Portugieser watch family with an exclusive event at the highest point in Amsterdam. Guests were taken on a ‘Journey to the stars’ to discover the new Portugieser collection at the prestigious Rembrandt Tower Boardroom on the 32nd floor.
The theme of the event was “Journey to the Stars” and the entire evening was devoted to the secrets of measuring time and the complex mechanism of the Portugieser, the most prestigious watch family from IWC Schaffhausen.
Edwin de Vries, Brand Director IWC Benelux & Scandinavia: “We are very proud to introduce the new Portugieser collection which truly reflects our passion for the art of watchmaking. 2015 is the year of the Portugieser and we will not only celebrate the birthday of a genuine icon but also the introduction of three new models.”
Besides enjoying exquisite dishes served by Michelin star chef Wilco Berends from restaurant De Nederlanden, the Portugieser watches were the stars of the evening. Guests were explained new models such as the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition “75th Anniversary” and the newly developed Portugieser Annual Calendar and the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days Edition “75th Anniversary” whose design harks back to the first Portugieser watches of the late 1930s and the early 1940s and pays worthy tribute to this extraordinary watch family.

Offering a truly unique experience, a professor and astronomic researcher explained to the watch aficionados the flexibility of time in space and the difference of solar time versus sidereal timing while having present the most exclusive and complicated mechanical watch ever made by IWC: the Portugiser Sidérale Scafusia. IWC Schaffhausen took 10 years to develop this extraordinary watch which features a constant-force tourbillon, perpetual calendar, sidereal time and a fabulous astronomical display which can be personalized to any geographic location.
The new Portugieser Annual Calendar brings together two firsts for IWC and three masterstrokes of haute horlogerie in a single case: the newly developed annual calendar closes the gap between the perpetual calendar and the simple date display. The new IWC-manufactured 52850 calibre has two barrels that keep the new function supplied with ample energy and still has enough left for a 7-day power reserve.
IWC continues to enhance its Portugieser watch family with new, eye-catching complications. After the minute repeater (1995), the 7-day power reserve (2000), the perpetual calendar (2003), the Tourbillon Mystère (2004) and the constant-force tourbillon (2011) – to name but a few – the recent 8-day hand-wound movement (2013) consolidated the Portugieser watches’ reputation as one of the leading lights of haute horlogerie.
