The Ingenieur Automatic 40 also features a newly developed crown protection. This crown guard helps to protect the crown against all sorts of impacts and unintentional adjustment. At the same time, this striking design detail underscores the character of a full-fledged sports watch and blends perfectly with the design language of the case.

The titanium grade 5 alloy used for the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is around 45 per cent lighter than steel, robust and skin-friendly. However, titanium is also extremely difficult to machine. The production of the case and bracelet and the finishing of all components using various surface refinement techniques represent a true feat of engineering.

Gérald Genta was born in Geneva on 1 May 1931. After completing his apprenticeship as a goldsmith, he went into business as a watch designer, establishing a profession that had not previously existed. His legendary steel luxury sports watches with fully integrated bracelets, defined a product category unknown to the Swiss watch industry in the 1970s.

INGENIEUR SL

In the 1970s, IWC commissioned Gérald Genta to redesign the Ingenieur. Genta’s Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, was launched in 1976. Its strong aesthetic codes such as the screw-on bezel with five recesses, the dial with a special structure and the integrated H-link bracelet have shaped the history of the IWC Ingenieur to this day.
