Portugieser Yacht Club Perpetual Calendar 42

Since 2010, the Portugieser Yacht Club has brought a sporty expression to the Portugieser collection, marrying the line’s hallmark maritime elegance with genuine robustness and functionality. An integrated crown guard and water resistance to 10 bar speak to its sporting credentials, yet none of the Portugieser’s defining design elements have been sacrificed. Applied Arabic numerals, slender feuille hands, and the signature minute scale – reminiscent of railway tracks – remain firmly in place. The 42.4 mm case is crafted from 18-carat Armor Gold®, an alloy whose engineered microstructure makes it considerably harder and more scratch-resistant than conventional 5N gold alloys. The deep black Obsidian dial is set against solid gold appliqués, while the robust, water-resistant black rubber strap is fastened by an 18-carat 5N gold pin buckle.

The perpetual calendar presents its wealth of information across three subdials: the date at 3 o’clock, the day of the week at 9 o’clock, and – at 6 o’clock – the month alongside the moon phase. The lunar display is accurate to within one day over 577.5 years, achieved through a finely calculated reduction gear. A discreet leap year indicator at 9 o’clock counts down the remaining years to the next bissextile year. Powering this watch is the IWC-manufactured 82651 caliber, fitted with the Pellaton automatic winding system incorporating ceramic components and offering a 60-hour power reserve. Decorated with circular graining, the movement can be admired through the sapphire glass case back.

Perpetual Calendar

In the early 1980s, IWC’s head-watchmaker Kurt Klaus set out on an engineering journey to translate the Gregorian calendar with its many irregularities into a mechanical program for a wristwatch. His ingenious perpetual calendar, which debuted in the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar in 1985, comprises only about 80 parts and displays the date, day, month, year in four digits, and the moon phase. The smart mechanical program automatically recognises the different length of the months, and even adds a leap day at the end of February every four years. The moon phase display is so precise that it will deviate from the actual phase of the moon by just one day after 577.5 years. All displays are perfectly synchronised and can be adjusted simply by turning the crown. Some models come with an additional century slide, so the watch can continue showing the date until 2499. The calendar only needs a small adjustment in those centurial years that skip the leap year, which is the case in 2100, 2200, and 2300. Some versions of the calendar feature a double moon phase display, showing the moon phase on the northern and southern hemispheres.
