Introducing the Portofino Complete Calendar 41
IWC’s family of calendar complications has a new member. The Portofino Complete Calendar 41 (Ref. 3590) is the manufacturer’s first timepiece to feature the newly developed complete calendar module. Known for its unique expertise in calendar complications, IWC introduces one version in 18-carat 5N gold and another in stainless steel. They join the manufacturer’s exquisite collection of calendar complications, which includes the iconic Perpetual Calendar and the Annual Calendar.
The Portofino Complete Calendar 41 allows for quick and easy reading. The subdial at 12 o’clock displays both weekday and moon phase, while at 6 o'clock, it indicates date and month at a glance. Each display is driven by a separate gear train and can be adjusted independently of the others. The calendar module boasts 69 individual components and is integrated into the IWC-manufactured 32150 caliber.
Contemporary Design
The Portofino family has been known for its purist and minimalist design. Casual yet elegant, the Complete Calendar references bridge the gap between classic calendar complications and contemporary aesthetics . With 41 mm in diameter and 11.75 mm in height, this timepiece ensures an ergonomic fit and perfect wearability, while its dial layout, case size and height beautifully harmonize with each other. The IWC-manufactured 32150 caliber has been elaborately finished with blued screws and a gold-plated rotor and can be admired through the sapphire glass back.
IWC’s design team incorporated the well-balanced two-counter layout on the dial - whilst continuing to honor the classic aesthetics of the Portofino family. The two subdials at 12 and 6 o’clock display the date, month, weekday and moon phase. The calendar only needs to be adjusted in months with less than 31 days. On the last day of the month, the date must be set to the position 31 via the crown. All calendar displays will then advance simultaneously during the night. The 18-carat 5N gold version (Ref. IW359002) boasts a silver-plated dial, gold-plated hands and solid gold appliques. The stainless-steel model (Ref. IW359001) features a silver-plated dial with gold-plated hands and appliques. Both models are fitted on straps made of traceable Swiss calf leather, one taupe and one blue.
Expertise in Calendar Complications
IWC Schaffhausen is known for our unique expertise in calendar complications. In the 1980s, former watchmaker Kurt Klaus developed his legendary perpetual calendar, which premiered in the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. It automatically recognizes the different lengths of the months and will continue to function without any manual adjustment until 2100. It became one of the most famed perpetual calendars of all time.
More calendar and date complications followed: the perpetual calendar with digital date and month display, calendars with single and double moon phase displays, the retrograde date display, and the Annual Calendar, to name just a few complications that can be found across all of IWC’s watch families. To this day, IWC continues to develop and innovate striking mechanical novelties that amaze and astound.
Portofino Automatic 39 Pointer Date
There is perhaps no better Portofino reference that depicts the family’s elegant refinement than the sophisticated yet understated Portofino Automatic 39 Pointer Date (Ref. IW359201). The pointer date indication shows the date in an analogue manner in the subdial at 6 o’clock. Watching the pointer jump to the new date every day at midnight is nothing short of mesmerizing! Enclosed in a 39-mm stainless steel case, this model features a silver-plated dial with gold-plated hands and appliques. The Portofino Automatic 39 Pointer Date is fitted on a brown calfskin strap made of Swiss leather and features a quick-change system that allows for easy change of the strap.
