Ingenieur SL - Automatic

Launched in 1955, the IWC Ingenieur, Ref. 666, marked IWC’s first antimagnetic wristwatch for civilian use. Created for professionals facing strong magnetic fields, it featured a soft-iron inner case for protecting its movement from magnetism. Its clean, functional dial ensured excellent legibility. The Ingenieur Ref. 666 established IWC as a leader in antimagnetic watch technology and remains highly sought-after.

This iconic IWC Ingenieur SL "Jumbo," Reference 1832, was designed by the legendary Geneva watch designer and artist Gerald Genta and first launched in 1976. This 40mm stainless steel sports watch features a black dial and is powered by the Caliber 8541B. It is renowned for its antimagnetic properties, protected by a soft iron inner case shielding the movement from magnetic fields up to 80,000 A/m.

Launched in the early 1980s, the Ref. 5221 is an elegant Lepine pocket watch. Its case is elaborately decorated using the Niello technique, a 19th-century method from Tula, Russia. This process involves engraving silver or gold cases, filling them with a Niello paste, heating, grinding, and polishing. It features the Caliber 952 pocket watch movement.

The Ref. 5420 is a wearable masterpiece where art meets horology. Its case was conceived by Austrian artist Professor Ernst Fuchs, integrating his surreal visions. Calibre 98 was re-engineered as Calibre 9826, focusing on hour and minute displays to prioritize the artistic design. With only 218 pieces crafted in gold and silver, it represents a rare collector's item.

The IWC Yacht Club, launched in 1967, was an elegant all-weather timepiece with a robust automatic movement and impressive water resistance. Reference 9205, an 18ct gold version, was produced in limited numbers (200 pieces made between 1968-1983). Powered by the Caliber 8541 with a Pellaton winding system, its production ceased in the 1980s. This example was sold on June 27, 1972, to the Vienna-based jeweler Rosenmeyer.

IWC Schaffhausen Flagship Boutique – New York

Portugieser Automatic

Introduced in 2000, the IWC Portugieser Automatic Reference 5000 was the first IWC watch to feature the newly developed Calibre 5000, an automatic movement with a Pellaton winding system and a 7-day power reserve. Limited to 1000 pieces, this variant features a 42mm stainless steel case and a distinctive "reversed Panda Dial" with black hands. It is powered by the automatic IWC Calibre A/5000.

Introduced in 1987, the IWC Novecento Reference 3545 impresses with its elegant Art Deco design. It is the first and only rectangular watch from IWC to feature a perpetual calendar, automatically displaying the date, weekday, month and moon phase. This specific example boasts a very rare black German dial within its 27x32mm light yellow gold case. It is powered by the automatic IWC Calibre A/32061-00.

The IWC Portugieser Automatic was introduced in 1997. Measuring 35mm in diameter and 8mm in height, this watch features a silvered dial with gilded Arabic numerals, lancet hands, and a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock. The IWC Caliber 891/2 is visible through the sapphire crystal case back. This specific example was sold on April 24, 1997, to a family in Beringen, Canton Schaffhausen.

Introduced in 1985, the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph was the first IWC watch to feature the synchronized perpetual calendar developed Kurt Klaus. This variant features a 39mm case crafted from 18-carat gold and a white dial. It is powered by the Caliber 79261, which also offers a chronograph function. Consisting of only 81 parts, the perpetual calendar can be advanced easily through a single crown.

Introduced in 1987, the IWC Reference IW925203 is a distinguished variant of the Da Vinci with the perpetual calendar from Kurt Klaus featuring a full gold bracelet. Only 150 pieces were reportedly made until 2003, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after variations of the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. This example has a sales record dating its first sale back to October 31, 2000.

Ingenieur SL

This IWC Ingenieur SL, Reference 3506, launched in 1983, continues Gérald Genta's distinctive design in a compact 34mm diameter and 8.8mm height. Featuring a stainless steel/gold "bi-color" case and a gold dial, it offers magnetic protection via a soft-iron inner case and 120m water resistance. It is powered by the IWC Calibre A/3753, an ultra-thin automatic movement based on the ETA 2892.

Romana Perpetual Calendar

Introduced in 1995, the IWC Romana Perpetual Calendar Reference 205007 is an exceptionally rare (167 pieces) platinum wristwatch. It features a 36mm 950 platinum case and a rhodium-plated dial with blued hands and Roman numerals printed in black. Powered by the hand-wound Calibre H/18561, it boasts a perpetual calendar displaying the date, weekday, month and moon phase on the dial.

This specific piece boasts a unique provenance, having been owned and preserved by an IWC employee throughout the years.

Restored and serviced by IWC

Each watch undergoes a meticulous examination at the IWC headquarters in Schaffhausen. Skilled vintage watchmakers restore the cases, bracelets and movements as close as possible to their mint condition using original and, if available, period-correct IWC components.

Official certification

Upon completion of the restoration process, IWC issues an official certification that details the authenticity and provenance of each IWC. Curated. watch.

Read the story

1. Dismantling the case and the movement

Upon the watch’s arrival at the restoration department in Schaffhausen, the movement is separated from the case. The watchmaker then disassembles the case, meticulously refinishing the surface of each component and removing any deeper dents or scratches. The refurbished case parts are then reassembled with new gaskets.

Next, the watchmaker dismantles the movement into its individual components. Each part undergoes a thorough cleaning and is carefully inspected for its condition and functionality. Any worn or damaged parts are replaced with original IWC components.

2. Assembly of the movement

In the next step, the movement is assembled. During this process, the watchmaker carefully checks all adjustments, including the endshake of the wheels. If necessary, new components are adapted to ensure they interact seamlessly with the existing parts of the movement.

Next, all lubrication points in the movement are treated with high-quality watch oils. Less than a thousandth of a milliliter is required for the entire movement. Finally, the watchmaker conducts a detailed check of all movement functions.

3. Visual and functional inspection

In the final stage of the restoration process, the dial and hands are attached. The watchmaker then encases the movement and regulates the watch. Testing on a watch winder simulates real-life wearing in all positions. In this process, both the timekeeping performance and the automatic winding mechanism are tested.

After conducting a final visual and functional inspection—always following the four-eyes principle—the strap and clasp are fitted. The watch is now ready to begin the next chapter of its story.
