We continue our #IWCTalksTo series with a talk to the award-winning actress Cate Blanchett.


Biography

A graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Ms. Blanchett’s first major stage role was in 1992 when she starred in David Mamet’s "Oleanna" for the Sydney Theatre Company, where she was later co-Artistic Director for five years from 2008. Stage appearances in Europe, Australia and the United States include "Plenty," "Hedda Gabler," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Gross und Klein," "Uncle Vanya," "The Maids" and the titular role in "Richard II." Theatre awards include: the Ibsen Centennial Commemoration Award, Four Helpmann Awards for Best Female Actor in a Play ("The Maids," "Gross und Klein," "Uncle Vanya," "Hedda Gabler"), two Sydney Theatre Awards for Best Actress in a Lead Role ("Gross und Klein", "A Streetcar Named Desire"), two Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production ("Uncle Vanya," "A Streetcar Named Desire"). Her film roles include "Carol," "Truth," "Cinderella", "Blue Jasmine," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "I’m Not There," "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," "The Good German," "Notes on a Scandal," "Babel," "Bandits," "The Life Aquatic" with Steve Zissou, "The Aviator," "Coffee and Cigarettes," "Veronica Guerin." A six-time Academy Award nominee, Blanchett has been awarded two Academy Awards, multiple Best Actress awards from BAFTA, AFI, SAG, and the Hollywood Foreign Press, Venice Film Festival’s Volpi Cup for Best Actress. Cate is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Australian Film Institute Ambassador, Australian Conservation Foundation Ambassador, Patron of the Sydney Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival. She has been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government and the Centenary Medal for Service to Australian Society through Acting. She holds three Honorary Doctorate of Letters from University of NSW, University of Sydney and Macquarie University.
