The Colors of TOP GUN: Mojave Desert

Colored ceramics are a powerful statement. The material illustrates the evolution of IWC TOP GUN from a line primarily focused on performance to a style statement and expression of a distinct lifestyle.

“Mojave Desert” is inspired by flight suits and the barren desert landscape around China Lake, where the famous TOPGUN flight school is located.

Colors enter TOP GUN

In 2019, Mojave Desert marked the first use of colored ceramic in IWC’s TOP GUN collection. Colored ceramics are created in a sophisticated process in which zirconium oxide is mixed with other metallic oxides and sintered at high temperatures in a kiln. Because the color changes during the furnace process, it takes countless trials and a lot of experience to find the right mixture.

Our Mojave Desert cases are produced by blending zirconium oxide with selected metallic oxides. As the colour transforms during the sintering process, achieving the desired tone requires extensive experimentation and years of materials expertise.

The ceramic case is paired with a subdued brown dial, complemented by brown hands filled with Super-LumiNova® and a rubber strap in the same Mojave Desert hue. The careful color-matching of every component – from case to dial to strap – creates a striking monochromatic aesthetic that immediately captures the eye.
