GLOBAL IWC FAMILY UNITES FOR “TIME WELL SHARED”

Schaffhausen, 30th March 2020 – As the world faces a health crisis, the global IWC family stands together for the launch of “TIME WELL SHARED”. Through this initiative, IWC employees, brand ambassadors and partners will share their time, knowledge, experience and passion through digital channels. They aim to inspire people to make the most of their time, and entertain and support them by keeping them connected and engaged.

In this period of uncertainty and isolation, the members of the global IWC family are standing together to launch the initiative: “TIME WELL SHARED”. “In these extraordinary times, we would like to reach out to people with a message of solidarity, hope and positivity. Through our spontaneous initiative, we want to offer a new way of staying in touch with the IWC family. We aim to encourage and inspire everybody to make good use of the time, to be here for one another, and to develop and grow stronger,” says Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.

“TIME WELL SHARED” encompasses online lectures, speeches and webinars that IWC will publish on digital channels during the following weeks. The aim is to entertain and support people in these difficult times. The initiative will include contributions from IWC brand ambassadors like Tom Brady, Fabian Cancellara, David Coulthard and Maro Engel and partners such as Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1, Tottenham Hotspur, Laureus Sport for Good, Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation, Solaris Yachts and Orlebar Brown.

For example, Pilot Matt Jones will share memories of last year’s “Silver Spitfire – The Longest Flight” expedition. Retired US Navy Captain and TOPGUN pilot Jim DiMatteo will elaborate on Navy Fighter Squadron values like performance, resilience and precision in business. Closer to home, David Seyffer, curator of the IWC Museum, will give insights into the history of IWC, and former Director of Marketing and Sales, Hannes Pantli, will divulge some never-before-told IWC stories.

All contributions are accompanied by a button to make voluntary donations, with IWC making the first donation. With the funds raised, IWC will support Save the Children. Save the Children aims to strengthen its programmes that protect children and families in countries that are hit by the virus, increase support for national health systems, and raise awareness among parents and caregivers on how to provide psychosocial support to children.

Winter training for the IWC Racing Team

Our latest video shows how, before the 2020 historic motorsport season gets underway, the IWC Racing Team enjoyed a thrilling winter training camp 1,800 metres above sea level in snowy St. Moritz.

Have you ever wondered how racing teams prepare themselves for an action-packed and successful season of motorsport? For the IWC Racing Team, 2020 began with an adrenaline-fuelled sprint across the snow and ice of St. Moritz and the Engadine in its beautiful 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”.

The chic town of St. Moritz and the spectacular surroundings of Switzerland’s Engadine region were just the place for the IWC Racing Team to refocus with an adventurous test drive ahead of the coming historic racing season – and not just because there is an IWC boutique in the tourist destination known by many as the “top of the world”. No, mastering the slippery, twisting roads that snake through the Alpine region calls for the same masterful concentration, unshakable conviction and absolute precision as the creation of each and every one of our timepieces by our skilled watchmakers in Schaffhausen. All the more so when driving a car as powerful as a 300 SL "Gullwing", as our exhilarating video demonstrates.

Conceived in 2018 to strengthen IWC Schaffhausen’s ties to the world of motorsport, the most prominent of which is its official partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team, the IWC Racing Team is IWC's historic racing offshoot. Previously piloted by some of the world’s greatest racing drivers including Karl Wendlinger, David Coulthard, and Bernd Schneider, the IWC Racing Team’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL “Gullwing” has already competed at such prestigious events as the Goodwood Members’ Meeting in England and the Arosa ClassicCar in Switzerland. The stage is now set for an epic 2020 season – our third with the mighty Mercedes.

IWC launches new line of Portugieser Chronographs with in-house movement

The Portugieser Chronograph is one of IWC Schaffhausen’s most iconic models. With its compact diameter of 41 millimetres, it fits almost any wrist. However, the thin bezel gives one the impression of wearing a significantly larger watch. The clear, functional dial boasts applied Arabic numerals and slender Feuille hands. Printed with a quarter-second scale, the characteristic réhaut not only allows precise reading of the stop time but also reminds us of the Portugieser’s origins as a nautical precision instrument for the wrist.

Now featured inside the sporty-elegant chronograph, is the IWC-manufactured 69355 calibre. The robust and precise chronograph movement in classic column-wheel design is visible now through a sapphire-glass case back.

Hayden Cox and IWC Schaffhausen present Haydenshapes’ pioneering approach to upcycling manufacturing waste

IWC Schaffhausen and brand ambassador Hayden Cox have released a new film showcasing the surfboard designer at work. Focusing on Cox’s pioneering approach to upcycling, within his Haydenshapes Surfboard business, it marks the next stage of a shared journey between the Australian and IWC Schaffhausen towards greater sustainability.

Shot mostly on location at Haydenshapes’ floating pop up studio ‘Remote’ on Sydney’s Pittwater, which was set up in partnership with IWC Schaffhausen, the film demonstrates how the company is trying to reduce its impact on the environment. Cox is shown repurposing manufacturing waste, which is typically thrown away, into performance surfboard components and an innovative new cloth.

IWC Schaffhausen has long been a leading proponent of greater sustainability within the industry. As well as recently signing up to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment to avoid plastic waste, renewable electricity powers the brand’s new Manufacturing Centre as well as the Headquarters.

IWC and Laureus Sport for Good take programme participants to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport factory

IWC Schaffhausen and Laureus Sport for Good offered a group of young people an exclusive look behind the scenes of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport factory in Brackley, UK. The group, who are members of the Laureus-supported Fight for Peace programme, were given a unique insight into how the team’s championship-winning cars are designed and manufactured.

Based on a shared passion for engineering, IWC Schaffhausen has been the “Official Engineering Partner” of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport since 2013. Teaming up with another of its partners, Laureus Sport for Good, IWC Schaffhausen offered a small group of children a fascinating look behind the scenes. With academies in Rio de Janeiro and London, and through an alliance of partners in 25 countries, the Fight for Peace programme works to realise the potential of young people living in communities affected by violence, crime and social exclusion. Combining martial arts with education and personal development, it aims to eventually help attendees into further education, employment or training.

IWC Schaffhausen is proud to congratulate long-standing partner Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and brand ambassadors Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas on yet another stellar Formula One™ season.

At this weekend’s United States Grand Prix, Hamilton secured his sixth FIA Formula One™ Drivers’ World Championship*. Just a few weeks ago, at the Japanese Grand Prix, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport clinched the 2019 FIA Formula One™ World Constructors’ Championship*. Hamilton’s success in Austin makes Mercedes the first team in the history of Formula One racing to score six successive title doubles.

Proving just how imperious Mercedes - and their drivers - have been in 2019, Hamilton’s team mate Valtteri Bottas was the only other person in the running for the drivers’ title on Sunday.
