Ingenieur

In his landmark principles, German industrial designer Dieter Rams argues that good design is always based on a balance between form and function, and ultimately, embodies the philosophy “less, but better”. This idea is exemplified by the Ingenieur SL, created by Gérald Genta in the 1970s. The modern Ingenieur merges Genta’s forward-thinking design with engineered ergonomics and meticulously detailed finishing.

The incredible story of the Ingenieur SL.

In the 1970s, Gérald Genta created the Ingenieur SL. However, with the modesty and sobriety of a tool watch manufacturer, IWC Schaffhausen marketed the watch exclusively to engineers, a group that found Genta’s design too visionary and too bold. As a result, between 1976 and 1983, only 598 pieces were produced and sold.

Small things can have big beginnings.

Stepping out of the shadow of a famous ancestor can be a daunting task. The Ingenieur Automatic 35 masters it with flying colours: all the iconic design features of the larger Ingenieur models, distilled into a more compact 35-millimetre case size offering perfect ergonomics and wearability on smaller wrist sizes.
