50 years ago, in 1976, IWC Schaffhausen launched the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832. Created by Gérald Genta, it holds its place in history as one of the designer’s era-defining luxury sports watches with integrated bracelets. Drawing directly on Genta’s visionary design, the modern IWC Ingenieur combines the bold aesthetic cues of Reference 1832 with enhanced ergonomics and meticulous finishing.

1976 - The Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832
In the 1970s, IWC Schaffhausen tasked Gérald Genta with redesigning the Ingenieur. The Geneva-based designer and artist created the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832. The stainless steel luxury sports watch featured a bold design with a distinctive screw-on bezel, a textured dial and an integrated bracelet. In the tradition of the Ingenieur, a soft-iron inner case protected the Calibre 8541 from the effects of magnetic fields.
1982 - First Forgotten, Then an Icon
As IWC marketed the watch exclusively to engineers at first, Reference 1832 did not become a commercial success. Despite its visionary aesthetic, only 598 pieces were manufactured between 1976 and 1982. After production ceased, the design faded into obscurity for decades – until it was rediscovered by collectors around the world. Today, the Ingenieur SL ranks among the most sought-after timepieces in IWC’s history.
2023 - The New IWC Ingenieur
With the Ingenieur Automatic 40, IWC returned to the bold design codes of Gérald Genta’s Ingenieur SL, combining it with enhanced ergonomics and meticulous surface finishing. The characteristic bezel attaches to the case ring with five functional screws, while the dial features a “grid” structure consisting of small lines and squares. The integrated bracelet attaches through its middle link, providing a highly ergonomic fit.
2026 - The Collection Grows
Since its launch, the new Ingenieur collection has been continuously expanded with new case sizes, fresh dial colors, advanced case materials and high complications. In 2026, the collection was completed with the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar 41, crafted from lightweight yet highly rigid Grade 5 titanium. The Ingenieur Tourbillon 41 also joined the collection as the first Gérald Genta-inspired Ingenieur to feature a flying minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock.
