Ingenieur Automatic 42

The Ingenieur Automatic 42 marks a faithful translation of the Gérald Genta-inspired Ingenieur design in dark olive green ceramic. To achieve a true-to-proportion ceramic execution that is as slim as possible, IWC opted for an innovative multi-part pure ceramic case construction. The case ring, bezel and case back ring are all made of dark olive green oxide ceramic, which IWC used for the first time in the Ingenieur collection.

Even add-on parts like the crown protection are engineered from this extremely hard and scratch-resistant material. A thin inner titanium ring accommodates the functional screws from the bezel and the case back ring, holds the movement and ensures a high water resistance of 10 bar. This approach enables a ceramic execution that stays perfectly faithful to the original stainless steel design.

Connecting to the case via its middle links, the integrated bracelet offers perfect ergonomics. As ceramic is a particularly light material, it is highly comfortable to wear. The dark olive green dial features the characteristic “grid” structure made up of small lines and squares.

The gold-plated hands and appliqués are filled with Super-LumiNova® and ensure optimal legibility in all lighting conditions. The Ingenieur Automatic 42 is distinguished by golden accents. The crown is made of 18-carat red gold, while the screws used to secure the bezel to the case ring are made of 18-carat Armor Gold®.

For the Ingenieur Automatic 42, IWC has pushed the boundaries in ceramic finishing with a combination of satin-finishing, sandblasting and polishing. As ceramic ranks among the hardest materials on Earth, this finishing is a complex and time-consuming process that can only be executed using diamond-tipped tools. The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82110 calibre.

Its Pellaton winding system efficiently converts movements of the oscillating mass in both directions into energy for the mainspring, building up a power reserve of 60 hours. Components that are subject to high stress are made of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. The movement can be observed through the tinted sapphire glass case back.
