THE STORY

This Pilot’s Watch, which carries the name Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is packed with technical highlights. The mechanically programmed perpetual calendar shows not only the lunar cycles but also the seconds, minutes, hours, date, day, month and year in four digits. It takes into account the different lengths of the months and all the leap years in the Gregorian calendar until 2100. All of the displays advance automatically. The perpetual moon phase also lives up to its name, and will need to be corrected by 1 day only after 577.5 years. Two barrels in the IWC-manufactured 52610-calibre supply the power needed to provide 7 days’ running time and drive additional functions and displays. A glance through the see-through sapphire-glass back reveals the sophisticated design of the movement. Clearly visible are the elements new to the calibre family such as the twin barrels, the improved Pellaton winding system with practically wear-free ceramic components, the blued screws and the various decorations on the bridges.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Many children and young people do not have access to a proper education. Their chances of success on the job market are therefore low and they cannot properly integrate in society. The Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation is dedicated to helping them. The charitable organization was founded in 2008 by the descendants of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry to uphold his humanist legacy. IWC Schaffhausen has been a partner of the foundation since 2006 and regularly releases special edition Pilot’s Watches in honour of Saint-Exupéry. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these watches goes to support a number of different school and education projects. The watches feature a signature tobacco brown dial and a brown calfskin strap with cream-coloured quilted stitching. The unmistakable design is reminiscent of the flight suit worn by Saint-Exupéry during his reconnaissance missions.

Calibre Family 52000

Calibre Family 52000

The twin barrels are the trademark feature of the 52000-calibre family. They supply the watches with sufficient energy for a 7-day power reserve and drive energy-sapping complications like the annual calendar and perpetual calendar.

Perpetual calendar

Perpetual calendar

The perpetual calendar is one of the most fascinating haute horlogerie complications. Originally developed by former chief designer Kurt Klaus and continuously improved since then, it is mechanically programmed for 577 years.
