With the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive, IWC Schaffhausen ushers in a new era of purpose-designed space watches. It is the first mechanical tool watch engineered from the ground up to meet the demands of human spaceflight and timekeeping in orbit.

One Bezel. Every Function.

For future scenarios involving EVA (extravehicular activity), during which astronauts exit the spacecraft wearing pressurized suits and gloves, all watch functions can be operated via the innovative, patent-pending rotating bezel system. A clutch mechanism known as the Vertical Drive transmits the rotations of the external bezel to the winding stem within the movement. A rocker switch located on the side of the case allows the wearer to switch between functions, such as winding the movement or setting either of the two time zones.

Designed with a Dual-time Zone Function.

Because a space station orbits Earth approximately every 90 minutes, astronauts experience up to 16 sunrises and sunsets within 24 hours. The Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive displays mission time on a 24-hour scale along the outer edge of the dial. The familiar UTC/GMT format used on Earth enables astronauts to organize and manage work and sleep cycles in orbit. The central hour and minute hands can be set to display home time for any location on Earth. Back on Earth, the dual-time functionality transforms the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive into the ultimate travel companion.

Haven-1 will lay the foundation for Haven-2, a multi-module, continuously crewed station that is proposed as a successor to the International Space Station (ISS). The Haven stations are designed as state-of-the-art, human-centric innovation labs for both private astronauts and government missions.
