Mercedes-AMG

IWC and Mercedes-AMG have been partners since 2004, making their collaboration one of the most long-standing between two brands from the watch and automotive industries. Both companies share a passion for performance and design and a commitment to engineering excellence down to the smallest detail.

AMG was established in 1967 in Grossaspach, Germany, by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher with the visionary concept of incorporating cutting-edge racing technology into road-going series vehicles. Today, it represents the sporting spearhead of Mercedes-Benz with a wide range of models ranging from performance compact cars to true sports cars like the AMG-GT family. Each one of their engines is assembled in Affalterbach, Germany, by a single mechanic according to the “One Man, One Engine” principle. Currently, Mercedes-AMG is pushing the company’s transformation and redefining the future of Driving Performance with electrified powertrains.

IWC and Mercedes-AMG have been partners since 2004, making their collaboration one of the most long-standing between two brands from the watch and automotive industries. Both companies share a passion for performance and design and a commitment to engineering excellence down to the smallest detail. Throughout their partnership, IWC and AMG have shared exhilarating moments in motorsport and beyond and created many lasting memories for their clients. IWC has introduced several special-edition timepieces inspired by performance engineering and featuring materials from automotive engineering such as ceramic, grade 5 titanium or carbon fibre.

In 2021, Mercedes-AMG got its place as a permanent feature of IWC’s Pilot’s Watches collection as IWC introduced the first IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph ever in titanium. The timepiece features a carbon fibre dial and is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre movement. The chronograph was unveiled with a webcast conversation between IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr and Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer.

IWC and Mercedes-AMG both count Maro Engel and David Coulthard as their brand ambassadors.

Maro Engel

Born in Munich on 27 August 1985, Maro Engel started racing professionally in German Formula BMW at the age of 16, before competing in the German and British Formula 3™ Championships. Over the course of his professional career he spent five years with Mercedes-AMG in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), two years with Venturi in the all-electric FIA Formula E™ Championship and has enjoyed a successful career in GT3 since 2012. Triumphs include, among others, his victory at the 2016 24 Hours race at the Nürburgring and two victories in the Macau Grand Prix/FIA GT World Cup (2014 and 2015). In 2020 he set a new production car lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. He continues to be an essential member of the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport team racing in the Mercedes-AMG GT3. In 2021 he took victory with his teammates at the 24-Hour Daytona (GTD) race in Florida. He has been an official IWC brand ambassador since 2017.

DAVID COULTHARD

David Coulthard, born on 27 March 1971, in Twynholm, Scotland, has been a leading light in motor racing for over thirty years. After dominating Formula Ford categories in 1989 and fighting a titanic battle for the 1991 British Formula 3™ Championship, Coulthard was destined for Formula One™ success. In 1993 he joined Williams as a test driver, before switching to the race seat the following season. Between 1994 and 2008, the Scot competed in 246 Grands Prix for Williams, McLaren and finally Red Bull, winning 13 events and finishing the 2001 season second in the Drivers’ Championship to Michael Schumacher. After retiring from Formula One™ racing in 2008, he switched to the DTM series, participating from 2010 to 2012. Driving for Mercedes, Coulthard was Maro Engel’s teammate. The DTM AMG Mercedes C-Class Coupé he was given to drive was his first Mercedes DTM model, and he promptly finished fifth at the Norisring in Nuremberg. As well as being a successful businessman, he is now a Formula One journalist and broadcaster and is also president of the British Racing Drivers' Club.
